Sadie Sink, who is playing the role of Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, is dealing with a lot of emotions here in Season 4.
The American actress is still not over the loss of Billy Hargrove (played by Dacre Montgomery) and is still trying to cope with the situation.
The former boyfriend of Max Mayfield, Lucas Charles Sinclair, is portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin, one of the main protagonists of Stranger Things. He is seen trying his best to be there for Max and is trying to dig deeper.
Sink shared in an interview with Tudum, “That was too much for her.”
He tries to give her the ticket to his game and encourages her to find out something that means to her so she can distract herself. Lucas tries to console Max, but she is not ready to burden any other person with her emotions.

Max and her survivor guilt
Max has survivor guilt, and she wishes she could go back in time and switch places with Billy.
Her grief is so much to her in season 4 that she starts dressing differently here in this season. The 20-year-old actress Max begins to get haunted by Billy, who has come back through Vecna’s curse to haunt her at his grave.
The loss of Billy was followed by Max’s Stepdad leaving them and how her mother had to take up two jobs to make ends meet.
Shifting to a new place for which Max had no liking and witnessing her mother descending to alcoholism are strong reasons to justify the depth of her grief.

Lucas and his desire for popularity
Another reason for Max and Lucas’s breakup is the transformation and shift in Lucas’s life.
He shows a desire for popularity and is focused on himself. At the same time, Max is thriving on her grief and is not open to social gatherings or Lucas’s Basketball games.
Unintentionally or intentionally, the strings are pulled from both sides, and they cannot be on the same page.
It is rightly quoted that too much grief feels like fear and is tough for anyone to handle. The teenagers who are already going through a lot do have such emotions to handle. Such fear of grief also makes Max skip her appointments with her guidance counselor.
In Stranger Things Season 4 – Lucas is always there for Max like no one else could ever be. The way he pulls Max away from Vecna’s curse proves this.
