Why is Bass Reeves (rather than the Duttons) the main character in second season of 1883 series?

Why is the second season of 1883 series focusing on a new character rather than exploring the lives of the Dutton? Here is all we know so far.

The second season of 1883 series will introduce a new protagonist character in the form of Bass Reeves, the famed lawman who inspired The Lone Ranger.

Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 season 1 told the narrative of James and Margaret Dutton and their children, who moved to Montana in 1883 and settled on what would become the Yellowstone Ranch, the inspiration for the famous show Yellowstone. The first season’s ten episodes concluded the first chapter of the Dutton family tale with sorrow and rejuvenation, setting the tone for what was to happen in that hallowed place for decades to come.

The Dutton family drama will be continued in a new Yellowstone prequel series, 1932, which will take set about 50 years after 1883 and feature Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. 1932 will likely follow the Dutton children as they continue their mission to protect the Yellowstone Ranch from everyone who would seize it.

However, it looks that the year 1883 has more stories to tell since Sheridan declared that the series will be continued, but with a new protagonist: real-life lawman Bass Reeves. David Oyelowo will play Bass Reeves in the second season of 1883 series or a 1883 spinoff series, titled 1883: The Bass Reeves Story.

Reeves was born in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1838 to slave parents and was owned by William Reeves, who gave him his surname. He served as the first Black man among 200 federal marshals in Indian Territory, opening the way for more to come. His actions have frequently been cited as a major influence on The Lone Ranger, a former Texas Ranger turned vigilante.

He eventually purchased acreage in Arkansas before being appointed as a federal U.S. marshal in 1875, making him the nation’s first Black marshal. This occurred during the Westward Expansion, when people traveled routes such as the Oregon Trail, including through the wilds of what was then known as Indian Territory, which had become a lawless sanctuary for outlaws seeking protection from the government. As a result, Reeves never lacked for work.

This occurred during the Westward Expansion, when people traveled routes such as the Oregon Trail, including through the wilds of what was then known as Indian Territory, which had become a lawless sanctuary for outlaws seeking protection from the government. As a result, Reeves never lacked for work.

During his tenure, Reeves apprehended almost 3,000 outlaws and shot and killed 14 persons in the line of duty. He was recognized as a master of disguises, which he employed to aid in the capture of his prey. Reeves left his employment as a federal marshal in 1907 to become a police officer in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He died in 1910 from Bright’s Disease. Therefore the second season of 1883 series will cover his story.

In the second season of 1883 series or 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, British actor David Oyelowo will play Bass Reeves. With a few exceptions, Oyelowo has generally played supporting roles, most notably as Martin Luther King, Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s Selma.

In addition, he has worked with director Lee Daniels on The Paperboy and The Butler, as well as Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and with Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher. Oyelowo has also appeared in J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, Nash Edgerton’s Gringo, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, and Star Wars: Rebels as the voice of Kallus. In addition to the second season of 1883 series, Oyelowo has been cast in a revamped rendition of The Rocketeer for Disney+.

Taylor Sheridan, the author of 1883 and Yellowstone, stated that the season one finale of 1883 was always intended to be a one-season drama.

The Dutton family tale will continue in additional spinoffs including 1932, 6666, and the main Yellowstone series. 1883: The Bass Reeves Story or the second season of 1883 series might be the beginning of a new anthology, one-off series, or multi-season series based on the real-life lawman.

So, fans, are you excited to see one more installment of Taylor Sheridan’s super-popular series, 1883?

  1. While I’m sure Bass Reese’s story is one well worth telling, calling it a second 1883 season is misleading and disappointing for the fans who were hoping for perhaps a few more insights into the Dutton’s life after Elsa. It’s rather misleading and perhaps should have been advertised as a separate series by Mr.Sheridan and Paramount+. The title “1883” has strong ties to the Dutton saga to many fans who were hoping for a little more about their life between 1883 and the next installment-1932.
