It came as quite a shock to many Sanditon fans when the widower refused Charlotte’s proposal in the Season 2 finale last Sunday. The chemistry between Charlotte and Alexander was undeniable, and many were hoping they would get together.

But instead of asking Charlotte for her hand in marriage, the widower fired her as his governess. Heartbroken by Alexander’s refusal to acknowledge their fiery kisses and romantic connection, Charlotte turned down his reemployment offer and agreed to marry Ralph, the farmer.

The Season 2 finale of PBS’s stellar Period Drama series Sanditon saw Charlotte (played by actress Hayley Atwell ) reject Alexander Waverly’s ( actor Ed Westwick ) proposal. Thankfully, the scandalous rejection did not go unnoticed.

After witnessing Charlotte’s emotional status, her father, Judge Francis Sanditon ( actor Simon Callow ), gave his blessing to the couple.

The wedding is set for this summer) and will have a lovely reception at Alexander’s mansion. But first, there are still a few more things that need to be done in Sanditon Season 2.

In the Jane Austen-inspired series, Alexander Colbourne said his character didn’t just break Charlotte’s heart; he broke his own. “I was crying in the dressing room after each script reading because I wanted them to be together,” Lloyd-Hughes told Reuters.

Except for the Season 3 premiere, Carey Mulligan will not be present on any shows this season. Instead, her role will be replaced by Hayley Atwell. Atwell plays Charlotte Colbourne, caught between two gentlemen: Alexander Waverly (played by Ed Westwick ) and Ralph Delafield (played by Simon Callow ). Both men have feelings for her, but only one can have her.

Lloyd-Hughes recently told PBS.org that Colbourne’s turn of events was a “weird thing to play,” due to traditionally being the nice guy. “Finally he has been pushed to a position where, in his own mind, he is giving up something that means everything to him.”

As per the Sanditon Season 3 spoilers, the actor told he hopes audiences feel it’s not the end for Colbourne and Charlotte. “I hope people think it’s not done and dusted for them,” he said. “To me, it’s like a relationship between two people who have got together and fallen out, but hopefully will resolve it at some point.”

Lloyd-Hughes also told the site that he’s aware of the intense fan scrutiny on Alexander and Charlotte, something that he is “taking in my stride.” “For me, it is a very odd thing to play–not having known how it was going to end,” he said.

Series creator Michael Lake told Variety, “I cannot imagine him being anything besides a really good guy — when you need him, he’s there, and when you don’t, you can see him drawing back.” He added: “It would be silly if [Alexander] had no vulnerability. He has got vulnerability, and that makes him interesting.
