Justin Bieber revealed on social media that he suffers from a rare condition called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

In a tweet earlier today, the singer announced that this condition temporarily paralysed one side of his face.

It’s been a busy year for the pop sensation, having canceled several performances due to personal and medical reasons — most recently, Bieber canceled his remaining Purpose World Tour dates.

“So there’s full paralysis on this side of my face”: in an Instagram video, Justin Bieber admitted he has paralysis on the right side of his face, causing him to have issues controlling facial movement.

In his Instagram video, the singer said he thinks it was due to a concussion he suffered while skateboarding. He also said that he has no feeling on his right side.

Due to the condition, Bieber cannot move his eyes or the right side of his face. Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt syndrome is all over the internet right now.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome isn’t just a medical condition — it’s a term that refers to a group of symptoms caused by facial nerve inflammation.

The symptoms are because of the damage to one of the cranial nerves, specifically facial nerves 7 and 8. Facial paralysis can occur suddenly or gradually and be temporary or permanent in those who experience it.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a condition that causes paralysis on the same side of the face as the ear and persistent ear pain. The symptoms include:

  • Painful rash and blisters around the ear.
  • Facial paralysis on the same side.
  • Hearing loss in the affected ear.
  • Ringing noises or Tinnitus.

Severe pain in the ear can make it difficult to eat or sleep—trouble closing the eyelid on the same face side because of severe pain.

The effects can be permanent if Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is left untreated. However, it’s always a possibility that symptoms will disappear in less than three months.

To see whether or not the disease goes away for good, patients often test their hearing after three months to see if it has improved.
