The show’s protagonist, Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), is more than capable of taking on such a challenging task.
As the story opens, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) is summoned by the hospital’s administrators to turn the situation around.
In the series, it becomes obvious early on that Max suffers from cancer, and he and Helen develop an on-and-off relationship as he undergoes treatment. It is often one of the major plot points of the series.
Do we expect to see Dr. Helen Sharpe again in Season 5 of New Amsterdam?
It has been reported that “New Amsterdam” will be the show’s final season when it premieres on September 20, 2022. It has been speculated that Helen will stay in London or have kids on the show as she has made overtures regarding both during Season 4.
As the episode ends, Helen reveals that she has not left London for the wedding she was supposed to have. There is, of course, the question of whether Helen will be returning to “New Amsterdam” or will she move on to something new.
Dr. Sharpe’s actor took to Instagram to announce her departure from New Amsterdam season 5.
Announcing her decision on Instagram, Freema Agyeman has disclosed that she will not be returning to play Dr. Helen Sharpe.
She expressed her appreciation to all the fans of “New Amsterdam” for their enthusiastic support and added that she has enjoyed connecting with them due to their shared love of the story.
For her send-off, she gave a shoutout to all the “New Amsterdam” fanfic writers who will keep her character alive in their own ways. She said, “While I am saddened, I am also incredibly excited to see how the story concludes as a fan of the series.”

Entertainment Weekly released an official statement from showrunners David Schulner and Peter Horton that said, “We wish Freema the best of luck on her next chapter and the doors of ‘New Amsterdam’ will always be open if she wishes to return! … As we head into the fifth and final season we want our #Sharpwin fans to know we still have a few surprises in store for them.”
Will she be seen in a spin-off?
It appears that despite Agyeman leaving Season 5 of “New Amsterdam,” she would still be welcome back if a spin-off series were to be created, as Deadline reported in 2020.
It seems likely that fans will get some closure regarding Max and Helen’s relationship in Season 5 of New Amsterdam, considering what happened in the last episode of Season 4.
