However, James Dutton’s father was also called James Dutton Sr in a major flashback of the series. So, the John Dutton Sr we witnessed was around 120 years old by the time he took his last breath.

This implies that he was around 70 years old when Kevin Costner’s John was conceived. So, it may be possible that Yellowstone’s John Dutton is the third generation carrying the name, making James Dutton and John Dutton’s great-grandfather.

  1. I don’t understand how Jame’s Dutton can be Kevin Costner’s – John Duttons Great Grandfather when in an episode of Yellowstone John Dutton states that the Yellowstone Ranch has been in his family for 7 generations. Then states in another episode that after seven generations he would be the one to lose it.
